10 PS1 Games That Completely Messed With Your Mind

3. N2O: Nitrous Oxide

The team behind Wipeout worked hard to distance their game from drug culture, following the initial controversy around some of its marketing. The makers of the aptly named N2O: Nitrous Oxide had no such qualms. Using a tube shooter format that was already by this point a little outdated, the aim is to steer your vehicle and shoot the enemy insects, all whilst collecting "E" coins, mushroom shields and other less than subtle power-ups.

All of this is set to a soundtrack from The Crystal Method at the height of the Big Beat phenomenon and the interface for the game goes out of the way to be generally as psychedelic as possible. Due to some formatting magic, owners of the game were also able to pop the disc out of the console and play through the soundtrack in a conventional CD player, allowing a further opportunity to blow some '90s minds.
