Silent Hill

At the time of release, Silent Hill was the scariest game ever made. The survival horror keeps players on their toes, with multiple endings based on a series of choices and play style. Alongside this comes a series of jump scares and the intelligent use of shadow and fog, maintaining an air of uncertainty as to what is to come. The player aims to find his lost daughter in the town of Silent Hill but soon runs into all manner of supernatural monsters.

The thing that sets Silent Hill apart from others in the genre is its deeper and murkier lore. Exploration of the series' themes reveals a multi-layered story taking in the physical manifestations of phobias and desires, religious cults and travel between dimensions. Silent Hill's examination of guilt, childhood fears and love make the game all the more psychologically taxing. The fact there is also a joke ending which sees Harry Mason abducted by aliens just cements the game's reputation for being able to do the unexpected.
