10 PS1 Games That Still Look Good In 2018

4. Nightmare Creatures (1997)

1997's Nightmare Creatures is an overlooked gem on the original PlayStation. Released during a time in which action platforming was still the go-to genre, the game's developers took a risk by centering the game around an in-depth close-quarters melee combat mechanic. Comparable in a sense to beloved titles like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, it's an easy-to-learn yet difficult-to-master sort of ordeal.

Like the previously mentioned Alien Resurrection, the atmosphere present in Nightmare Creatures is what sells it as a truly scary video game experience. Horror games were still hard to come by in the late 90's as home consoles weren't yet powerful enough to deliver totally immersive experiences, but this game stands as an early example of tense and terrifying digital gameplay.

Mostly devoid of music, Nightmare Creatures' instead subjects its players to a brooding ambient track which fits well with the game's dark, unnerving character designs. The game's enemies—horrific amalgams of flesh and teeth—come across as totally disturbing, and it's amazing to think that this game is still creepy over two decades after release.
