10 Questionable Moments In Nintendo Games You Totally Ignored
7. Ice Climbers Clubbing
When bringing a game to another country, there are always issues to be on the lookout for with regards to cultural differences. Thus, when it came time for Nintendo of America to localize Ice Climber, they made a peculiar change. Players might have wondered why they were bopping the yeti-like Topis over the head when yeti are generally from the Himalayan region, rather than the arctic. But why? As it turns out, all those pint-sized yeti players had been clubbing were originally seals in the Japanese version of the game. Clubbing seals is considered a pretty heinous thing to do in the west, but in Japan? Not so much, apparently. Have a closer look: The change is longstanding, too, as the creatures made a reappearance in the Ice Mountain level of Super Smash Bros. Melee many years later. Once again, Japan got the seal version of Topi, while everyone in North America and Europe got the yetified version.
