Kingdom Hearts has deservedly gained a reputation as one of gaming's most convoluted series. After the release of Kingdom Hearts II in 2006 on PS2, we’ve since seen two DS spin-offs, a PSP prequel, a 3DS half-sequel, several compilations and a distant prequel on mobile phones before we finally got Kingdom Hearts III last year.

One of these in-between titles was Kingdom Hearts Coded. KH fans will be more familiar with its DS remake, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded, but it began life as a mobile phone game, released episodically across June 2009 to January 2010 as a Japan-only entry.

Featuring a more puzzle-focused approach to gameplay, Coded sees you play as a digital replica of Sora, created by King Mickey to explore a digitised version of Jiminy Cricket’s diary after a mysterious message appears that he did not write.

Its biggest strength lied within the gameplay, bringing in different mechanics for each world, such as turn-based battles in Olympus Coliseum. Coded added little to an already confusing plot though and whilst the DS version superseded the original, only the most die-hard fans need to concern themselves with this entry in any capacity.
