It could be argued that the first Zone of the Enders game sold well enough to warrant a sequel only because it came with a Metal Gear Solid 2 demo. Whilst that may or may not be true, it was still a decent game.

The sequel, however, was such a vast improvement, as well as a visual treat to PS2 owners in 2003. A better aesthetic, refined combat and an engrossing story did really well for Kojima's other robot franchise.

As such, it's been spruced up for both PlayStations 3 and 4, but it hasn't been a continued success story. Whilst the former's port is a massive improvement, the latter's has not been as well received. The VR inclusion is a nice touch, but it has since fallen by the wayside.

A sequel was announced back in 2012 alongside the reveal of the first HD collection (for PS3/Xbox 360), with Kojima going on to state it was in an "early prototyping phase".

However, the response to the first HD collection wasn't as expected, which saw Kojima drop the sequel shortly after.

Having gone on to bigger and weirder things, there's little hope we'll ever see the Jehuty in action again.
