10 Reasons Nintendo Have Us WORRIED
2. No New Mario In Time For The Mario Bros. Movie
In April, Nintendo and Illumination are going to have a box-office smash on their hands with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. So where's the video game tie-in to lure fans from movie theatres to their gaming platform?
Mario is Nintendo. The company is missing a huge opportunity by not getting a Mario video game out alongside the movie. February's Nintendo Direct explicitly said it would only cover six months of 2023, which leaves the run from September to the holiday season empty.
Recognition of 10 March (MAR10 day) brought the release of the final movie trailer and a Switch bundle with Mario Odyssey packed-in. But that's no substitute for a fresh game to ride the hype from the new movie. Look how well The Last of Us PS5 sold due to launching in the vicinity of the HBO show.
New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and Bowser's Fury are great mixes of old and new Mario gameplay, and show that people still want Mario titles. So, how about a Nintendo x LEGO title, with platforming and karting just like the movie trailers? Or, how about anything at all? It's bordering on incompetence that Nintendo didn't prepare any sort of gaming tie-in for what will likely be one of the biggest movies in years.
