10 Recent Overhyped Video Games That Absolutely Flopped

1. Anthem

This was meant to be the one. After handing over Mass Effect to a side team at BioWare, the main team spent their time focusing on Anthem -- a looter shooter which was thought to marry the allure of Destiny with the storytelling of Mass Effect.

Months upon months of hype shrouded this product, BioWare actively fuelling that hype by using all their resources to create a truly unique experience.

What was released, however, was far from what players expected and was reflected in critical response and what EA class as ‘failing to meet expectations’.

The game was a repetitive, boring slog, with a lacklustre story and very little incentive to buy into the looter gameplay loop that games such as Destiny had since perfected at this point.

It felt as though only half of the game was distributed to the public, with very little endgame content to incentivise players to continue playing after the credits rolled. It simply boiled down to repetitive combat encounters with little to no rewards.

BioWare has said they're going back to the drawing board with Anthem, promising a completely retuned experience which will live up to the hopes and dreams of fans. But for many, the moment has passed.
