4. Evolve
The previous generation saw incredible multiplayer games which pitted many players against monsters. Left 4 Dead was a notable entry which took the world by storm with its engaging, terrifying and addictive multiplayer experience. Evolve wanted to invoke the same feeling, but give players the opportunity to play as the monster.
The basic premise was a multiplayer experience which pitted four players against a human controller monster, which sought to feed and constantly evolve as matches progressed.
Early betas proved promising, highlight a new concept which multiplayer gaming hadn’t really delved into at this point. It was a nice change from the annual Call of Duty entries.
What was later uncovered was bland and boring multiplayer experience. Players and critics were actually fairly positive about the game on release, but then its legs started to show as it quickly became a repetitive experience.
It was later criticised for not being a substantial enough multiplayer venture, with matches lasting far too long and combat not having enough meat on its bones. The player count quickly dropped as fast as it peaked.
Now, Evolve is a free-to-play experience, trying to claw back some of the player base. But it still remains a quick flash that disappeared into obscurity relatively quickly.
