10 Recent Video Games We Were Way Too Harsh On
6. Starfield
Bethesda isn't just responsible for creating the best Elder Scrolls and Fallout games, but among the best titles period. With this in mind, gaming veterans expected the long-gestating Starfield to be Skyrim in space.
Although the out-of-this-world shooter was praised for its immense world-building, varied missions, and emphasis on exploration and freedom, there were quite a few gripes. Due to the inconsistent graphics, excessive load screens, and repetitive gameplay, Starfield wasn't all it was cracked up to be.
Even though it was still decent, Starfield was torn to shreds, purely because it wasn't the be-all-and-end-all we expected. (You'd assume the hype wouldn't be so high after Bethesda bungled Fallout '76.)
Also, some of the criticisms felt like nitpicking. Before Starfield was released, there were complains that the main menu was too bland. Firstly, this grievance has nothing to do with the gameplay itself, and second, who spends more than a couple of seconds on the main menu?
Players also took umbrage with Starfield's technical problems. Although there are bugs, these issues were nowhere near as bad as previous Bethesda titles when they launched. Nevertheless, there were unsubstantiated reports of glitches that rendered this space-faring sandbox unplayable.
Starfield cannot compare to Bethesda's best, but it's far from their worst.
