10 Most Ridiculously Over-The-Top Examples Of Gaming Censorship
5. Carmageddon
Carmageddon's awesomely ridiculous name accurately describes what it's about: high-risk races through densely populated areas. This wasn't just a racing game, though. Sure, you could win by being first across the finishing line, but if your racing skills weren't up to scratch you could always destroy every other competing vehicle or mercilessly mow down every pedestrian in the vicinity instead. Well that was the original plan, anyway. It all went wrong when some bright spark decided to build hype for the Carmageddon's gory content by submitting it to the BBFC and obtaining an 18 certificate for the game. This resulted in the somewhat unexpected outcome of the game getting banned. A censored version was eventually released. In the UK version, the blood of the pedestrians and animals was changed to green to imply that they were zombies. In Germany, the humans were replaced with robots that bled oil, which is nowhere near as cool. The BBFC eventually certified the original version for release a mere 10 months later after numerous appeals by the developer, making this whole affair as pointless as life itself.
