10 Most Ridiculously Over-The-Top Examples Of Gaming Censorship

6. Manhunt 2

The original Manhunt was so shockingly violent it made concerned citizens yearn for the good old days of Grand Theft Auto. After all, running over a prostitute and getting your money back seems mild when compared to sneaking up on an unsuspecting goon, forcibly jamming a crowbar into his skull and swirling it around a bit. The sequel to Rockstar's most violent game managed to cause controversy just by being announced. This did not work in its favour however, as it was initially refused certification before being given the dreaded Adults Only rating, meaning that many major retailers wouldn't stock it. Worse still, both Sony and Nintendo refused to permit its release on their platforms with this rating. And so, Rockstar were forced to censor the game. The released version applied a trippy filter to the visuals whenever an execution occurred. It was so severe that it was hard to make out what was going on (though the sounds hinted towards bloody, horrible murder). The weird thing is that Manhunt 2 wasn't even significantly more violent than its predecessor. The dated visuals of the Wii and PS2 made the violence seem crude and unrealistic when compared to games on the much more powerful HD consoles.

When I'm not playing games, I'm probably either writing about them somewhere or singing stupid songs inspired by them. Or eating pizza.
