Hollow Knight has many different ways this cute but dark game can end. In this ending, you've lost people to a dark infection and you find its source, the bug who came before you on a similar quest. This infection is held within The Hollow Knight, and you have come to stop it from leaking further into the world.
Seeing the one who came before you in this state is already sad enough, but it hits you as you fight him that maybe the hero who came before might still be in there somewhere. Midway through the fight, he starts to stab himself as if he wants to be defeated and finally be free of this infection. As you finish the fight, the infection needs a new host, and it latches itself onto you. This leads to you being locked up just like the knight, your fresh body being able to hold back it back just a little longer. Hoping the next one may be able to put an end to it.
