10 Scariest Horror Video Games You Might Have Missed
6. Cold Fear
Cold Fear deserved the world. It was an atmospheric, gory, survival horror adventure but sadly, it had the unfortunate disadvantage of being released around the time of Resident Evil 4. Due to its similar, yet admittedly clunkier gameplay, Cold Fear was ultimately compared to the all-time classic and suffered for it.
Tom Hansen, a US Coast Guard is caught up in a zombie nightmare at sea. Stranded on a Russian ship, Tom fights to survive against hordes of corpses who have been infected by parasitic organisms. You can see why it got compared to RE4.
The thing that sets this game apart though, is the physics. While on the ship, the environment will move as if it’s rocking on the waves, and loose objects can hit Tom. If he’s on the deck, waves can splash over and harm him too. It was a very clever trick and made it an immersive experience as players had to be aware of everything.
Sadly, Cold Fear failed to perform well and became a commercial failure. However it did find a group of fans and a film was even planned in 2006, but was soon scrapped.
