10 Scariest Horror Video Games You Might Have Missed
5. Obscure
Obscure was quite literally an obscure little release that came out around the mid-’00s. It follows a group of students who get locked in their school for the night so that they can investigate their friend’s disappearance. As night falls, they find way more than they bargained for and have to fight to survive the night.
The game received mixed reviews upon release. That explains why it managed to slip under the radar for most people, which is sad because it utilises unique and original gameplay styles.
Each of the characters are a stereotypical high school archetype, but they all work well together. We can take two of these characters at a time, but if we get into trouble and lose someone, it’s permadeath. This helps build the tension and makes for an interesting dynamic when anyone can die at any moment, so no two playthroughs are ever the same.
It also has an intriguing story that hits all the right survival horror beats and has a classic ’90s-’00s teen horror vibe. Imagine Buffy mashed up with The Faculty. If you missed Obscure and its sequel back in the day, you can find it now on Steam!
