3. Katawa Shoujo (Disabled Girl Dating Simulator)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HRqDtxg9X4 And about here is where we board the crazy train to Japan for the last three games in this list, easily the barmiest of the lot. To be fair to developer Four Leaf Studios, we have to praise them for their equal-opportunities approach to the otherwise unassuming genre of the dating simulator; we play an ill young man who has to choose between five girls who are ailed by various physical disabilities. Throughout the game, various choices you make can result in a successful, failed or neutral relationship, but what's more interesting, of course, is the roster of girls you're able to choose from. There's Emi, who has prosthetic legs after a car accident; Hanako, who was scarred by a house fire that killed her parents; Lilly, who is partially blind; Rin, who has no arms; and Shizune, a deaf mute. While it might seem like the game is vaguely exploitative in flippantly parading out these disfigured women, reviewers have generally praised the game for its unexpected level of taste and sincerity, treating the relationships in the game as seriously as any "normal" ones are in other games, even including some erotic cut-scenes (which can be turned off for younger audiences). Still, the literal translation of the Japanese title is "Cripple Girl", which seems a little insensitive, no?
