10 Small Video Games That Left HUGE Impacts
3. What Remains Of Edith Finch
In What Remains Of Edith Finch, players take control of the titular Edith as she returns to her remote family home. Believing that her family has been cursed with tragedy, she makes it her mission to learn more about her deceased relatives, who all died in extraordinary circumstances.
Players will spend most of their time exploring the empty home to find the rooms of her relatives. It's at this point the game includes a short playable section which recounts the final moments of that person's life.
Each of these segments are presented in a storybook-like fashion. They blend fantasy and gameplay elements together to create heart-wrenching vignettes which allow players to get to know characters they’ll never meet.
From a young boy who wanted to fly, a cannery worker who desired nothing more than to escape the monotony of his job, and – the most bittersweet of all – a baby with an active imagination, tragedy is inescapable in this house.
But in this game death isn't tragic. It's used as a tool to find meaning in a person's life, no matter how short the life or fanciful the story. This is what makes Edith Finch a beautifully human story about life.
