10 Stupid Things People Say About Video Games

9. They're Too Violent

Since many people assume video games are meant for children, when they see games that feature explicit scenes of sex and violence, they leap to the conclusion that the game makers are making these games for children. This is why franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Gears of War, and Mortal Kombat are continually accused of attempting to corrupt children. What these ignorant people are apparently unaware of is that these games are rated M for mature, meaning they are meant for adults, not kids. If a kid is playing GTA, they are not the target audience, and it is not the responsibility of the developers to care whether Timmy gets his hands on their game. That responsibility lies firmly on the parents. Even taking all that aside, the whole idea that most games are too violent is demonstrably false. The ESRB, the company responsible for rating video games, revealed that only 9% of all the video games they rated in 2011 where rated mature, while an overwhelming 45% were rated E for everyone. The fact is that most games have no overtly objectionable content, they just get less publicity than mature rated games, as they are targeted at the 30 year old gamer, and thus tend to be the more high profile releases. So the whole idea that video games are too violent is just flat out wrong, and if a parent is so fearful for their child€™s mental well being, there is a wide assortment of games meant for them. They just need to know how and where to look.
