10 Survival Horror Video Games You Must Play Before Halloween

Dead Space 3
EA

At a time when the big names in survival horror like Resident Evil and Silent Hill were either spinning off into radical new directions or fading into obscurity, a new IP from EA showed the world that the genre was still alive and kicking.

Getting away from some of the drawbacks that had haunted similar releases (you could finally move and shoot at the same time!), Dead Space modernised the genre while still retaining the horror core that players loved.

Set entirely aboard a derelict spaceship, EA's game placed subtle twists on every familiar mechanic that players were used to. For instance, no longer were you trying to exclusively nab headshots, because limb amputations actually did more damage. Likewise resources were more plentiful, but you had to go into your inventory and use them in real time.

They were only subtle changes, but combined with an incredibly atmospheric and claustrophobic approach to presentation and level design, they made Dead Space an instant survival horror classic when it released in 2008.
