10 Survival Horror Video Games You Must Play Before Halloween
4. Resident Evil: Remake
Although the original Resident Evil popularised survival horror back in 1996, it was far from a perfect horror experience. Hammy dialogue, stilted animations and a convoluted plot meant that the title revelled more in B-movie theatrics than genuine, spine-tingleing terror, an approach which never felt entirely intentional.
Fortunately, a 2002 remake (and a later 2015 re-remake) completely overhauled the original game with a brand new art style, new cinematics, and even entirely new gameplay sections. Making such radical changes while remastering a title could have stripped away what was special about the original, but in this case it actually made it better.
Ratcheting the tension up to 11 and subtly switching around scares and puzzles to keep things fresh for people who had played the original title to death, the remake was made with the kind of care and attention that you just don't see from modern remasters.
The first Resident Evil was always a great game, but the remake made it a perfect one, and an essential must-play for all survival horror fans.
