10 Survival Horror Video Games You Must Play Before Halloween

2. Silent Hill 2

While the original Silent Hill established a solid foundation for the series going forward, its sequel completely knocked that game out the park when it released on the PS2 back in 2001.

Resident Evil had the series beaten hands down when it came to pure combat and minute-to-minute gameplay, but what Silent Hill 2 lacked in shooting mechanics it more than made up for in atmosphere and pure pant-wetting fear.

Hell, just entering a new room in Silent Hill 2 can be a terrifying experience. Not only do you have no idea what's going to be waiting for you, but the dynamic nature of the world means that even if the hallway you came from was clear before, it could be full of enemies by the time you return.

A lot of survival horror titles are referred to as being claustrophobic, but none have managed to capture an oppressive, suffocating atmosphere quite like this iconic sequel.
