3. Until Dawn
Something a bit different from the other entires on this list, although Until Dawn doesn't have the expected mechanics associated with the survival horror genre (being a narrative-driven choice game, and all), it's perhaps more in line with the essence of the genre than releases like The Evil Within or Resident Evil 7.
Brilliantly revelling in classic horror cliches, the game puts you in charge of a group of stereotypical teenagers returning to a ski lodge on the one-year anniversary of a terrible accident, letting you decide whether they live or die.
Right down to the personalities of the characters, the player gets to tailor the experience to fit their own idea of a perfect horror movie, manipulating events while ultimately trying to keep the people they like alive and away from danger.
With the entire game boiling down to seeing whether or not you can keep the teenagers alive so you can unravel the mystery of the plot, while Until Dawn lacks a lot of the key staples of the genre, it's still a survival horror title through and through.
