2. Too Many Map-Pack DLCs

In some cases, DLC is required to fully complete and understand the story, and has become part of nearly every gaming genre, but first person shooters - in particular the online-multiplayer focused ones - have been affected by a particular type of DLC; map packs.

When these packs first became mainstream with their use in the Call of Duty series, it was a way for fans of the game to extend their enjoyment by giving them a few extra maps to play with.

Sadly, executives saw the potential revenue to be made from these packs and they quickly became a key element to the first person shooter genre, with nearly every new title in a franchise getting at least three or four map pack releases.

Being encouraged to buy these extra maps is one thing, but EA took things too far with the release of Star Wars: Battlefront. Despite being online only, it included hardly any maps in the base game, but had dozens of extra maps available to buy separately.

This blatant exploitation of gamers was made worse by the fact that the new maps included famous Star Wars locations and battles, making it hard for fans to ignore them.
