3. You Own Several Iterations Of The Same Handheld (And Still Want To Buy A Pokémon 2DS)

Nintendo are known for making use of older technology in their consoles to ensure they stay relatively cheap to produce, and therefore profitable from day one of being on sale. This differentiates them from other competitors who use high software sales, online subscription fees or premium priced accessories as selling tactics.

That said, Nintendo are also often guilty of sacrificing certain hardware features in order to reach low price points, especially when discussing portables. Game Boy and Game Boy Color aside, every Nintendo handheld has had an upgrade two or so years down the line. The Game Boy Pocket had the Japan-only Light. The Game Boy Advance had the SP. The DS had the Lite. The 3DS took a somewhat sideways step in this iterative process by downgrading to the 2DS then last year upgrading to the new 3DS.

Owners going through several of these upgrades along the way is fairly habitual for many Nintendo portable players - to the point that the new Nintendo 3DS of 2015 didn't even come packed with a charger, as Nintendo assumed many would have one from a prior release. Sneaky devils. How many versions of the Game Boy Advance/SP do you have knocking around?

Bryan Langley’s first console was the Super Nintendo and he hasn’t stopped using his opposable thumbs since. He is based in Bristol, UK and is still searchin' for them glory days he never had.
