10 Things That Killed Mortal Kombat 1
9. Lack Of Character Customisation
Many fighting games strive to offer player expression in their games and Mortal Kombat 1 did offer that to a degree with the Kameo system - more about that later - which allows players to play in a variety of different ways that best suited their preferred approach.
Expression via mechanics is all well and good but there are two sides to this style of game design and character customisation plays a big part in this.
Mortal Kombat 11 offered players a very robust character customiser with countless skins and accessories to choose from when assigning their preferred loadout of one skin/pallette and three gear slots.
Mortal Kombat 1 on the other hand allows players to choose one skin/pallette and one accessory. This may not sound like a huge change to a lot of people but when coupled with a huge lack of variety in skins/palletes on offer, it doesn't allow for much creativity when it comes to designing your loadout.
This issue was made all the worse when Tekken 8 launched, which offered a truly insane character customisation suite - one you could easily spend hours in changing everything from the colour of someone's hat to the laces on their boots.
