10 Things That Killed Mortal Kombat 1
7. Unwelcomed Changes To Beloved Characters
Speaking of Khaos Reigns, not only was its pricing a point of contention but on certain corners of the internet, there was one aspect of the expansion that drew even more ire.
Early trailers for Khaos Reigns showed that Cyrax and Sektor would be returning, but not in the form that most fans would recognise them. Due to Mortal Kombat 1's fixation on multiverse storytelling, we got female versions of the iconic cyber-ninjas, as well as hugely different backstories that changed many key elements of their established canon.
This decision garnered a lot of attention, both positive and negative, as some saw this as breathing new life into two characters who hadn't really done a whole lot in recent years, whereas others found the changes wholly unnecessary.
It's worth noting that it was only a certain sub-set of fans that took real issue with Cyrax and Sektor's drastic character overhauls, but said sub-set of fans do tend to be the most vocal, and the discourse around whether the decision to make Cyrax and Sektor female didn't do the game any favours when it's reputation was already suffering due to many perceived problems it already had.
