Sadly, it seems unlikely that we'll ever get another true Portal game. With Valve having relegated the IP to small VR experiments and Portal 3 seeming increasingly unlikely, it can sometimes feel as if the love of Portal has dissipated in the public consciousness and there'll never be more Portal to play again.

However, this could not be further from the truth. The Portal community is still going strong, and they've taken it into their own hands to develop more Portal content for fans all over the world to enjoy. Portal 2's Steam Workshop is brimming with thousands and thousands of unique user-made levels, and there are some true brain-teasers if you know where to look, with the best levels surpassing even Valve's own work.

Then, there are the modders, who are taking Portal to the next level by creating full-blown custom campaigns and fan-made sequels. Among the best mods currently available is the excellent Portal Stories: Mel, a fan-made campaign that's essentially a brand new Portal game in its own right.

Many more of these ambitious mods are currently in development, such as Portal 2: Desolation, Portal 2: Valhalla, and Portal: Catalyst. A quick look online will reveal an entire community dedicated to bringing fans more puzzling fun. Valve may not be developing any more Portal games, but thanks to the passionate Portal community, the future looks bright for Aperture Science.

Patch is a pop culture enthusiast and purveyor of puns. He writes about media in a vague attempt to justify the alarming amount of time he spends consuming it. Nobody's convinced... but nobody's told him that yet. He spends his spare time working on Portal 2: Desolation, an ambitious fan-made sequel to Valve's beloved puzzle games.
