10 Times Changing Protagonists Killed Video Games
1. Bomberman: Act Zero (2006)
There was a time in the mid to late 2000s when it seemed like every game had to be dark and gritty. While this edgier tone worked for the likes of Gears Of War, The Darkness, and Prototype, one series that didn't need to be darker was Bomberman.
Known for his round body and expressive face, the titular character's adorable design was the perfect match for the series' colourful and cartoony aesthetic. However, developer Hudson Soft completely overhauled Bomberman's tried-and-tested formula with Bomberman: Act Zero.
Released on the Xbox 360, this reboot was a complete departure from the cutesy franchise that players were familiar with. Not only was the wholesome setting transformed into a harsh, cyberpunk dystopia, but the loveable title character now sported a more realistic design that made him look like any other sci-fi character from that era.
With the addition of a horrendous isometric camera and the removal of local multiplayer, Act Zero played as badly as it looked. It was panned upon release and has since become recognised as one of the worst video games of all time.
Hudson Soft quickly realised their mistake and reverted to the old design, with the franchise continuing to flourish today.
