10 Times EA Screwed The Pooch

4. Loot Boxes

Given that we're at a point in history where people are starting to consider making loot boxes illegal, it's safe to say they're a pretty sketchy concept in general.

But especially when it comes to EA, who have clearly focused in on how to maximise their loot box profits in recent years. Rare is the EA game that doesn't have some sort of loot box mechanic attached to it, making it clear that this is not merely a different structure that certain sort of games work under, but rather an extra attempt by the company to grab cash.

Worse yet, though, is the way in which EA has tried to justify themselves after coming under fire. In a series of phrases routinely mocked by even those who support loot boxes, EA attempted to shift the goal posts by stating their their loot boxes were not loot boxes, but rather "surprise mechanics".

While outright criminalising loot boxes does seem a step far, EA's desperate Del Boy-like ploys to get out of even having legislation placed around them did raise a million red flags for countless people.
