10 Times Gaming Developers Brutally Messed With Historical Events
1. Pretty Much The Entire Plot - Wolfenstein
Wolfenstein 3D opens somewhat believably, with American spy William "B.J." Blazkowicz tasked with ending the Nazi regime of World War II. But it doesn't take long for the Grand-Daddy of the FPS genre and its many sequels to completely fall down the rabbit hole.
For starters, B.J. eventually finds himself on a mission to thwart the Nazis' secret plan to create an army of the undead. Then, by the end of Wolfenstein 3D, he has to take on Adolf Hitler in a giant mech suit. Subsequent reboots and remakes of the series have taken B.J. through various paranormal plots, ancient medallions of immense power and a ton of crazy characters bent on destroying the world.
Yet all that pales in comparison to Wolfenstein: The New Order. B.J. awakens from a coma to discover that the Nazi's have actually won World War II. Cue a whole new mission, fighting off robot attack dogs and advanced technology far ahead of its time.
This culminates in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, where B.J. attempts to liberate the now Nazi occupied USA. German forces have set up shop in Roswell, the resistance hides out within the Empire State Building and you travel to a Nazi space station on the surface of Venus. Yup.
