10 Times Gaming Developers Brutally Messed With Historical Events
5. A Very Different Cold War - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
It's considered one of the greatest games of all time, but historically accurate is not a phrase you would use to describe Metal Gear Solid. Most of the franchise plays itself out in a very different, violent and technologically driven alternate universe where civil wars are rampant and artificial intelligence has changed the face of war.
There is an exception though, namely Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater which sets itself within the 1960s era Cold War. Here, the future Big Boss is but a Green Beret named Naked Snake, assigned to a CIA unit known as FOX to retrieve a defecting Soviet scientist with ties to world changing weaponry. Cue various Hideo Kojima twists, turns and straight up ridiculous plot points such as a nuclear explosion to cover up the theft of an advanced super tank.
Let's just check here. Yup, definitely no nuclear explosions during the Cold War, and massive armoured tanks that would become known as the titular Metal Gears definitely don't exist. In fact, the real Cold War was largely played out across highly tense political and economical fronts between the United States and Soviet Union, with nary a Snake nor a gun fight in sight.
