While P.T. created one of the scariest bathroom scenes for the franchise in some time, Silent Hills - when it€™s eventually released - still has to follow a long act of brilliantly executed bathroom-based scares, the scariest of which is in Silent Hill 3. The setup is simple: you knock three times on the bathroom stall door, and something promptly knocks back twice. You're free to repeat this experiment as much as you desire without change, but the moment you decide to walk away the door will suddenly open, revealing only a blood-stained toilet. This bathroom scene is similar to the locker one from Silent Hill, except instead of setting up a misdirection for an improved jump scare, Team Silent chose to tone it down for a more chilling effect. Heather mirrors the players thoughts as they apprehensively approach the bathroom door, wondering if they are just imagining things. Sure, Team Silent could have used a louder sound effect to elicit a jump from the players, and they could have placed a menacing monster in the stall to greet them; but this is how Team Silent chose to distinguish its style from the competition: mess with players' heads so that they can create their own chilling theories for years to come.
