10 Times Video Game Publishers Insulted Their Fans
1. Star Wars Battlefront 2's Microtransactions
It's all too easy to forget that Star Wars fans weren't the only ones done a disservice by EA's acquisition of the license. DICE, despite the missteps it made with Battlefront's 2015 reboot, never had its love and respect for the franchise called into question. No Star Wars game that came before managed to capture the atmosphere of Lucas' universe so authentically, which is why we all had such high hopes for last year's sequel.
We'd even been made privy to the news prior, that all DLC for the follow-up would be free and that the lack of customization, progression and variety in the original would be taken care of for the sequel. What we weren't to know was that EA had no interest in making all of that available through play alone. Oh no. Instead, it forced DICE's hand by ensuring that monetization schemes infiltrated every aspect of Battlefront 2.
It'd be nice to say with confidence that EA learned its lesson, that treating consumers like cattle isn't a good public image to have, but it doesn't care - the ability to spend cash on in-game advantages looks set to return in the future.
Better make sure your community management team has learned how to communicate this time, EA.
