10 Times Video Games Totally Broke Your Trust
1. Guardian Ape - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
As evidenced by the previous entry, From Software games like to keep their players on their toes. You would think that after hours of dealing with constant betrayals, most souls-like players would be used to having their trust broken. But every now and then, the developers come up with something that can shock even the most jaded veteran of their games.
This kind of moment is the boss fight with the Guardian Ape in Sekiro. The majority of the fight is actually pretty standard stuff for a From Software boss. The ape deals a lot of damage, you block or dodge its attacks, and after a couple of tries, you finally manage to cut the ape's head off and get the "Shinobi Execution" message to pop up on your screen. At that point, you might think to yourself, "Well, I'm glad that's over," but just as you're about to move away from the corpse, the ape rises from the dead and immediately enters its second phase, with no warning whatsoever.
Given the long tradition of the "Foe Vanquished" being the beacon of hope for frustrated Dark Souls players, the fact that the ape gets back up after you receive your victory screen is truly a brutal trick.
