Devil May Cry 3 is said to be the most difficult game in the series, but what a lot of people don’t realize is that you can unintentionally make it even harder for yourself depending on which version of the game you’re playing.

Although the Special Edition is meant to be the same game and offers the same difficulty settings as the original, the original is secretly harder, and that is because of regional differences that occurred during the initial release.

The original North American and early versions of the European releases of Devil May Cry 3 were secretly made more difficult than the original Japanese version due to Capcom’s concern over the Western countries’ return policies that allowed people to return games if they completed them in just a few days.

In order to avoid mass returns, Capcom secretly increased the difficulty of Devil May Cry 3 across the Western world, later readjusting the European versions to match the Japanese one but keeping the difficulty high in the American release.

That's why if you pick up an old copy of American Devil May Cry 3, you'll find yourself struggling, while your friend playing on the same difficulty mode in a different version of the game will be doing just fine.
