Valkyria Chronicles was a great game. Its Strategy-RPG mechanic was creative, robust and downright fun. The gameplay was excellent. Thankfully the story was too. It has a few themes, but of course, the one we'll focus on here is the romance. Alicia and Welkin meet during a war torn time and build a relationship slowly but surely. As you can imagine, finding love in a battlefield is tough, but these two persevere throughout the game. Alicia, a vital component to the squad with Welkin, genius leader. Neither were given much chance from their own army head-honchos, instructed to battle with the assumption of lost rather than victory. They persevered. And at various moments during the war, learn to rely on each other. None more important than when Alicia is revealed to be a Valkyrie, a weapon that could change the outcome of war favourably on their side. At a cost though, as it would be at the expense of Alicia's life. Welkin of course, struggles to make sure Alicia doesn't have to sacrifice herself. And succeeds. Whilst sad endings make romance easily memorable, never overlook the good ones. They can provide some fantastic endings too. Valkyria Chronicles being such a case.
