10 Tough-As-Nails Strategy Game Missions That Made You Wave The White Flag

7. A Symphony Of Frost And Flame - Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne

The climactic battle of the game, A Symphony of Frost and Flame (yes, that is a reference to what you’re thinking of) is a disarmingly poetic name for what is a hideously difficult mission.

The set-up is simple: you must capture four Obelisks before the AI can do the same. To up the ante three full armies are arrayed against you and each requires a tailored approach to defeat: the Blood Elves are strong against magic and air units, the Naga boast some punishing melee types, and the Night Elves are outstanding at range. In other words the old fashion single-unit blob won’t work here – you must used combined arms.

To make life more difficult, the final obelisk is heavily defended. Wait too long to attack it or fail to thin the enemy ranks and you will have committed yourself to a defensive and offensive war, on three fronts, with forces barely adequate to achieve either.

Many Warcraft III veterans felt that the expansion was more difficult than the base game and A Symphony of Frost and Flame was the exclamation point that proved it.
