Part two of the infamously difficult Mortain sequence, Counter Attack wins out by kicking you in the teeth just that bit harder.

Unlike its sister mission, which handed you the simple but no less hairy mission of defending Hill 317 against a Wehrmacht assault, here you are tasked with defending multiple Victory Points, and while under equally heavy attack. Fail to secure them and not only do you lose points but precious resources as well. This impels you to spread your forces out, weakening a force already badly pressed to begin with.

Then add the fact that your primary defensive position is completely exposed, allowing the Germans to rain merry hell down on you from guns positioned both out of sight and easy reach. This makes your life hell because if those guns don’t outright kill your infantry it will slow them to a crawl, and for the armour you’re handed at the beginning of the battle it renders the field perilous in the extreme.

The real battle was no fun for the soldiers who took part in it and this unrelenting bruiser of a mission gives you a small taste of just how uncompromising war can be.
