10 Truly Horrible Things Video Games Made You Do

5. Cutting Your Finger Off In Heavy Rain

Resident Evil 7
Sony Computer Entertainment

With Detroit: Become Human on the horizon, Quantic Dreams' story-driven thriller Heavy Rain acquires a new relevance. One of its plot threads sees grieving father Ethan Mars searching for his kidnapped son, Shaun, who is in the clutches of the infamous Origami Killer.

The killers sets a series of Saw-esque trials for Ethan to earn the location of his missing son. One of them sees Ethan summoned to an abandoned building where the killer bids him sit down at a table in front of a video camera, and cut off one of his own fingers.

Heavy Rain forces the player to select the implement Ethan will use, then makes the player control Ethan as he hacks off one of his own fingers. The scene is graphic and intensely painful to play through, with Ethan's voice actor playing it to the yowling limit.

The killer is testing Ethan, but the game is performing a test of its own - one the player would definitely rather not undergo.
