One of the strangest urban myths in video games was the idea Michael Jackson secretly composed the music for Sonic 3, but for some reason, he didn’t receive credit. Jackson himself was a huge Sonic fan, and anyone with a keen ear will be able to spot similarities with some of his other music. The ending theme, in particular, is near identical to Jackson’s own song Stranger In Moscow.

Still, the rumour went unconfirmed for more than twenty years until an in-depth article on The Huffington Post revealed that yes, he did compose the soundtrack. He worked quite hard on it in fact, but he was ultimately disappointed with the quality of the audio for the Mega Drive and chose to keep his involvement a secret.

Sega kept mum on the issue and had another composer rework some of the music, but the bulk of it remains Jackson’s work.
