7. Metal Gear Solid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd3zMu707XU Though it's Harry Gregson-Williams who walks away with the lion's share of the praise for producing such a wonderfully cinematic, orchestral score on all subsequent Metal Gear Solid games, it is the first game on the PlayStation, scored by a number of in-house musicians for Konami, that has the most memorable theme tune of all. While lacking the refined, professional Hollywood sheen that Gregson-Williams brought to the table, its playful electronic stylings were unlike anything we had ever heard in a video game score before, underpinning the technology-related themes of the game. It's a very diverse tune, running the gamut of emotions, from being a playful, jaunty, upbeat tune, to a haunting, sombre one and then all the way back again. It's an unforgettable experience when we start playing Metal Gear Solid, and that feeling is wholly accentuated by this totally unforgettable opening theme, which served as the blueprint for all of Gregson-Williams' later renditions.
