10 Unsettling Horror Games With TERRIFYING Sound Design

1. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Although Ninja Theory's critically acclaimed Hellblade: Sena's Sacrifice is arguably not an all-out horror game in the same vein as the other titles on this list, its ingenious use of sound design is still able to make playing this game a wholly unnerving experience.

Playing as the titular Senua, this game's plot will see you travel into the realm of Helheim in order to rescue the soul of Senua's recently deceased lover. Combining puzzle solving and combat, exploring the beautifully crafted world of Hellblade is a fantastical experience. But it's the aforementioned use of sound where the horror elements shine through.

Designed to mimic the effects of psychosis, the player's actions are constantly undermined by a group of voices referred to as "The Furies" which mock Senua's actions and cast them in a bleak and negative light. Working alongside a team of experts and those who've suffered from psychosis themselves, playing Hellblade offers players an accurate, real-world depiction of what it's like living with the mental illness.

Using a set of good headphones is paramount to fully immersing yourself into the mindset of Senua as the voices echo all around you. While not exactly a pleasant experience, Hellbalde is certainly worth your time.
