10 Unsettling Horror Games With TERRIFYING Sound Design

2. Subnautica

Alien Isolation
Unknown Worlds Entertainment

On first appearance, the bright and colourful world of Subnautica seems like the furthest thing from a horror game as you begin to explore the tranquil shallows near your crashed lifepod. However, the deeper you venture, the more the horror elements unveil themselves to deliver some of the most unforgettable emergent moments of pure terror that'll stick with you for a long time.

After crash landing on an aquatic alien planet, the goal of this survival game is to uncover the mystery of what happened prior to your arrival and find a way to escape. Through exploration and crafting, you eventually acquire the means to dive further into the depths. And while these locations are home to some interesting discoveries, they're also home to some seriously threatening creatures.

At times surrounded in complete darkness with no way of seeing what's above, below, or behind you, listening out for telltale sounds of leviathans is your only viable option to avoid an unwanted encounter. Likewise, these creatures of the deep will be able to detect you if you make too much noise.

Everyone who's played this game will be aware of the roar of a Reaper and what that means.
