Need For Speed is celebrating its 25th birthday this year, and will be commemorating the occasion with the release of its 24th game, Need For Speed: Heat.

The identity of the prolific racer has changed a fair bit over the years, and not always for the better. It used to have a more gritty aesthetic with arcade features that still allowed a more realistic experience than the likes of Burnout. Recently though, it’s struggled to know what exactly it is.

The edges have been softened, the arcade feel has been toned down, but the realism still isn’t up there with competitors like Forza. Adding to that, there’s been some microtransaction controversy weighing down recent titles too. All that’s combined to set Need For Speed: Heat up to pass a lot of players by.

It’s been promised that this time around no lootboxes or microtransactions will feature, although players will still be able to buy time-saving features to expedite the unlocking of the 127 cars in the game.

The trailer looks like it’s aiming for edgy once more, but it’s so clearly a corporate focus group’s idea of what 'edgy' is.
