The annualised nature of the Call of Duty franchise of course means that the next title is being worked on long before the previous one has even been announced.

In recent years, Activision has set the franchise on a three-year, three-developer cycle alternating between original team Infinity Ward, Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games.

But per a recent Kotaku report, this successful formula has been disrupted for development on next year's Call of Duty game, with Sledgehammer Games and co-developer Raven Software being demoted to support staff, while Treyarch has been rotated in to continue main development.

In addition to the fact that this gives Treyarch just two years instead of three to complete the game - their last effort being 2018's Black Ops IIII - they have reportedly been tasked with re-shaping Sledgehammer and Raven's existing work mid-development into Black Ops 5, which will apparently be set during the Cold War.

Given the brutal crunch time this will force upon Treyarch employees, it's not a great environment within which to make a quality game, especially as the end product could feel like an awkward mish-mash of different developmental styles.
