10 Utterly Cinematic Video Game Trailers

2. Halo 3

I remember the hype for Halo 3. It was off the scale. I don't think I have ever gotten as wrapped up in a games release as I did in Master Chief's third outing. I remember I had never even played the previous Halos but I was still as excited as anything. Perhaps that is the reason, I remember this trailer fairly vividly. Chief in armour, looking to the sky, rendered to be nearly photo realistic is probably the image I think of when I think of cinematic trailers. The trailer starts off pretty cleverly and actually allows us a glimpse into Chief's past, giving him the sense of having an emotional core. It is actually pretty funny that the best bit of emotional story telling about Chief as a character, in Bungie's trilogy, was in a trailer. Showing off a bubble shield, which was new to the game, and also Chief's ability to reject common sense and run into any battle, no matter how outnumbered he is, it really shows off the spirit of the games and while it doesn't have any gameplay in it, it sets up the tone, a game mechanic and the tactical (if you can call it that) approach. It is actually an example of cinematic trailers done right, showing off really impressive CGI rendering as well as giving the viewer a good idea of how the game might actually play.
