The Call of Duty franchise has had its share of betas and demos through the years, though in the latter half of the 2010s, they became a more popular method of gauging player feedback and making some light changes before release. Infinite Warfare was a case where reception was more negative.

The beta launched exclusively on PlayStation 4 on October 14th 2016, around a month before release. Infinite Warfare was already facing some trouble when its announcement trailer became one of the most down-voted videos on YouTube for a time.

Unfortunately for Infinity Ward, players weren't quite completely sold on their take on futuristic combat. When they got into the beta, the game's faults quickly became clear, specifically regarding the map design and core action. For all its talk of offering freedom of movement, the battlegrounds were poorly produced, funneling the player down corridors and rarely allowing for any kind of creative traversal around the environments.

Nowadays, Infinite Warfare is regarded as one of the weaker entries in the series for these reasons. The animosity towards the multiplayer was so fierce that Activision was compelled to return to a WW2 setting a year later when Sledgehammer Games took the reins of the franchise.
