8. Jasper Rolls (Psychonauts)

Double Fine

Whilst surfing through the cranial confusion of Gloria Von Gouton in Tim Schafer's literal brain teaser Psychonauts, temple-rubbing protagonist Raz confronts the rotund, revolting Jasper Rolls, a mental manifestation of the actress' inner critic and the reason for her complete psychological collapse.

Unlike most of his contemporaries on this list, the evil Roger Ebert exhibits a much more convincing logic - somewhat surprising given he's a figment of an asylum inmate's mind.

Taking place within the lighting rig of Gloria's phrenic theatre, the key to subduing her shattered self-esteem is to stun the pundit with one of the three handily placed spotlights, before turning those tapping fingers to toast.

Proving how difficult it is for us to let go of our inner insecurities, Rolls smartly destroys one of the spotlights after being upended - but the witty critic isn't bright enough to blow out all three bulbs. Two thumbs down.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
