7. Cenobia (Shadow Of The Colossus)

Unlike the other big bastards populating the wasteland of Fumito Ueda's magnum opus Shadow of the Colossus, the 14th beastie Cenobia doesn't just lumber innocently along until Wander thrusts his magic sword straight into its face, but directly targets the truculent protagonist.

Dormin describes how Cenobia "lusts for destruction", and it's this appetite for architectural aggression which ultimately proves the guardian's downfall. With no discernible weak point to stab at on its armoured body, all the player can do is seek refuge on one of the pillars scattered around the ruins. That's when it dawns that using the radgie colossus' own anger against it is the key to unveiling his glowing rune of ruination.

Taking a lead from William the Conqueror's book, an arrow to Cenobia's eye brings about its demise. Enraged, the leonine brute charges Wander's platform, dislodging masonry onto its bonce and exposing the fur beneath. Repeating the trick twice over is enough to fully out Cenobia's susceptible sigil, and from then on its the usual business of stabbing it to death.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
