With its fast-paced and frantic combat, time loop roguelike Returnal was one of the hardest games to come out in 2021. The hectic bullet hell action onscreen meant players would need to stay alert if they aimed to make it to the end of a challenging run.

One boss which was more likely to lower those chances was the aptly named Nemesis, who’s fought at the top of the Derelict Citadel during the game’s third level.

A floating alien mass flanked by groups of allies, this boss wastes no time in covering the screen with a dizzying array of projectiles, each variety of which possesses its own speed and trajectory. Weaving between these orbs is already a palm-sweating challenge, but Nemesis lives up to their name by having their accomplices fire broad lasers across the arena, too.

The introduction of floating platforms in the following phases only ramps up the battle’s intensity as players must now grapple across them to get closer to Nemesis, once again avoiding projectiles and lasers. Moreover, the boss can teleport during the second phase, meaning that players will be forced to stay on the move.

At least this boss provides an epic visual spectacle for their fight.
